Tryouts: September 8th - 9th; 10th
Do I need to sign up for tryouts?
A: Yes. We need to know who is trying out ahead of time because our Athletic Trainers have to clear each athlete before they are allowed to tryout. Please complete this "AHS Volleyball Contact Form" so we can send you more information.
Q: What do I need to turn in before I am allowed to tryout?
A: Our Athletic Trainers have to clear each athlete before they are allowed to tryout. In order to be cleared, each athlete has to turn in all the medical forms listed in the "Medical Forms" tab to the left. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Q: How many teams are there?
A: This 2020 season we will have four teams. Varsity (all levels), JV (all levels), Flex (Freshman/Sophomore only), Freshman (Freshman only). This alignment was voted on by all the coaches in our district and passed unanimously for the 2020-2022 seasons.
Q: Does everyone make a team?
A: Unfortunately, we only have a limited number of spots per team. We try to keep around 12-15 per team depending on the level of players, which means we will have to make cuts.
Q: How are tryouts run?
A: You will need to go to all days of tryouts (Sept 8th and 9th for the first round of cuts and 10th for second round of cuts). Coaches will have everyone warm up, then explain each drill. Coaches will walk around with a clipboard taking notes. There will be little instruction on form, as coaches are to observe what skills you currently have and make decisions off of that.
Q: Do I need to go to all sessions of tryouts?
A: Tryouts will be over 2-3 days and have a Freshman/Flex session and a JV/V session. If you are a freshman, please plan on going to all Freshman/Flex tryout sessions. Select freshman might be asked to switch to the JV/V session based on what our coaches observe.
Q: What does the tryout schedule look like?
A: Please see schedule below, or look at the calendar. With COVID, plans are subject to change.
September 8th:
Q: Can my parents watch tryouts?
A: Sorry, but we have a closed tryout. They can wait for you at Austin High, but not in the gym.
Q: Do I have to get a physical before tryouts?
A: Yes. You will not be allowed to tryout until all medical forms are submitted into Rank One, which includes physicals. However, if you were at an AISD school for 2019-2020, your physical can be applied to the 2020-2021 school year. Athletes who are using last year's physicals have to meet with one of our athletic trainers, and they will determine if you are cleared to tryout, or if you need to see a doctor for an updated physical.
Q: Do we have a conditioning portion for tryouts ?
A: This year we do not, because COVID has set us back, and we don't have as much time as normal for tryouts. We will do conditioning during the year after teams are set. The most common being "tempos." They will sprint the length of a football field (100 yards) 10 times with a 45 sec break in between each run.
