Tryouts: July 31 - Aug 1 2023. AM and PM session each day.
Q: Do I need to register for tryouts?
A: If you are new, please fill out the Questionnaire and Contact Form so we have you on our list. If you have come to summer workouts or camp, we already have you down. In order to tryout, all athletes need to have turned in a hard copy of their physical so our athletic trainer can put it into RankOne.
Q: What does the tryout schedule look like?
A: Please see schedule below, or look at the calendar.
July 31-Aug 1: Tryouts are twice each day (AM and PM)
Q: Do I need to go to all sessions of tryouts?
A: Tryouts will be two sessions for two days (4 sessions total) and be broken into Freshman/Flex and a JV/V tryouts. If you are a freshman, please plan on going to all Freshman/Flex tryout sessions. Select freshman might be asked to switch to the JV/V session based on what our coaches observe. Some sophomores might be asked to go to the Flex tryout. Coach Woods will talk with players she wants to go to a different session. This could change over the course of the 4 sessions.
Q: What do I need to turn in before I am allowed to tryout?
A: Our Athletic Trainers have to clear each athlete before they are allowed to tryout. In order to be cleared, each athlete has to turn in all the medical forms listed in Medical Forms. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Q: How many teams are there?
A: Austin High has four teams. Varsity (all grades), JV (all grades), Flex (Freshman/Sophomore only), Freshman (Freshman only).
Q: Does everyone make a team?
A: Unfortunately, we only have a limited number of spots per team. We try to keep around 12-15 per team depending on the level of players, which means we will have to make cuts.
Q: How are tryouts run?
A: We will have a first round of cuts on day 1 and and second round on day 2. Plan on going to all days and sessions of tryouts (AM and PM). You will sign-in at the gym and make sure we have your updated physical on file. Coaches will have everyone warm up, then explain each drill. Coaches will walk around taking notes of each player and their skills. There will be little instruction on form, as coaches are to observe what skills you currently have and make decisions off of that.
Q: Can my parents watch tryouts?
A: Sorry, but we have a closed tryout. They can wait for you at Austin High, but not in the gym.
Q: Do I have to get a physical before tryouts?
A: Yes. You will not be allowed to tryout until all medical forms are submitted into Rank One, which includes physicals. The physical has to be completed on April 15th or later, but not before. Please see the Austin ISD website for more information on physicals.
Q: Is there a camp I can go to before tryouts?
A: Yes. This camp isn't mandatory, but highly encouraged.
Camp for 10th-12th: July 24-26 5-8PM
Camp for 7th-9th graders: July 24-26 9am-12pm
